In the eary 1940's, Swiss inventor Georges de Mestral returned home from a walk in the forest, and noticed that his trousers and his dog's coat were covered in cockleburs. When he studied the burs under a microscope, he discovered that they were made up of hundreds of naturally-shaped hooks which had engaged into the weave of his trousers. This discovery was to become the basis for a unique, two-sided fastner - one with stiff "hooks" like the burs and the other with soft "loops" like the fabric. VELCRO® Brand hook and loop fasteners continue to set the standards to this day.
